They are in a cage.....

Our 3-year old grandson, Benson, loves cars, fire trucks, tanks, and Spider Man. I thought he might also like airplanes. So, off we go to the Air Force Base for a day of holiday fun (2nd of January 2012).

We arrive at the base and crawl under and around a F-105. It was huge. I asked Benson if he knew what kind of plane it was, and he told me "it is a fast one, papa." He got that question correct.

Next we drive by the flight line and parking ramp. There's always something going on at the ramp. Lo and behold about 20 or so F-16 fighters were parked under canopies. I pointed, "Look, Benson, there are a bunch of airplanes over there."

His eyes got big, and he said, "Papa, can we take one"?

(No, we can't just take one, there are practical issues like how are we going to get it home, and then what are we going to do with it. I am sure your mom and dad would like it in the front yard...)

Then we pressed our noses to the flight-line fence, getting as close to the sheet-metal, gray machines as we could, when he said, "But, papa, they are in a cage. They are in a cage, papa, ...... do you have a key?  But, papa, where is the door, maybe we can walk through the door, and take one."

(After all, there were twenty or so of the things, it wouldn't hurt for a 3-year old to take one, just one, now would it....similar to how we take just one gummy bear, or one potato chip, just one.......)

Anyway, next time, maybe at an air show, we will get closer, and be in the cage with them.

Frequent Flyer Miles

I was reviewing an airline website recently and stumbled upon their frequent flyer policies. They had posted an update that basically said frequent flyer miles transferred due to a divorce would incur a $150.00 charge. I got to thinking, can it be that such a small thing as frequent flyer miles come up in divorce cases.

I have to be naive, but it blew my hair back to think people would quibble over such trivial things. The airline has obviously be inundated with such requests, otherwise they would not add a fee.

But, then I dared broach the subject with our neighbors. "Well, it depends on how many miles, he has", she said. And, then he said, "I wonder if you really have to be divorced to get the miles, uh I mean, do they check?" "After all, a ticket for $150.00 is pretty cheap."

I give up. Have we become so small to put so much emphasis on such a trivial thing? Obviously, we have. Any comments are appreciated.

Latest Milky Way Picture

Things are getting better with the Milky Way imaging. This is looking south from the ridge at the Pinnacles.

Piece of Mind

Time to start putting this little book together. I'm calling it Piece of Mind, and it will contain some thoughts I've put together over the past years.

Sample: 

As the chopper landed to our south, it kicked up clouds of thick, red, whirling dust. The door slid open, and amid the sound of the rotary blades, a stretcher of taut, green canvas was laid on the metal taxiway. Two shadowy, green figures off load a body--unknown to me--and place him in a dusty slump onto the plank of canvas. Off they strode, the body covered from head to toe, all except his wrist, hanging limply off the left side, swaying in cadence with their stride.

Milky Way - Low Density Red Gas

I thought this red tinge area was an artifact. But, after reading more, it is most likely low density red gas.

Milky Way - Big Cottonwood Canyon @ Silver lake

Silver Lake has some potential for Milky Way pictures. There is some harassing ground clutter (building lights) and the partially blocked "glow" of Salt Lake City to the west, but all in all, not too bad. 30 sec exposure, 3200 ISO, f4, Sony alpha 500 camera with wide angle Sigma lens.

Full Moon Reflection - Strawberry Pinnacles

I am chasing two picture opportunities right now, a perfect picture of the red-necked hummingbird at the Pinnacles, and a take-your-breath-away picture of the Milky Way. I'm getting neither. When I took this picture, there was no red-necked humminbird, and no Milky Way. But, there was a full moon off to the southwest that reflected off of this yellow cliff. The picture was taken about 10 PM, 30 sec exposure, 200 ISO, f4. Looking forward to perfecting this one a bit. But, note the Big Dipper (or Little Dipper??) in the upper left of the photo.
